What a suspension bush does, and when to change it

A bush is the compliant sleeve joining two moving parts of the suspension or driveline, absorbing the movement between them. From the factory they are rubber, a material that does its job on comfort but perishes, deforms and eventually gives way with years and mileage.

A worn bush announces itself: a dull knock over speed bumps, a shimmy through the wheel under braking, vague steering and uneven tyre wear. A deformed bush also shifts the geometry, so alignment after replacement is not optional.

Polyurethane against rubber

Polyurethane is stiffer and far more resistant to oil, ozone and fatigue. That translates into more direct steering response and less geometry drift under load, at the cost of passing on a little more vibration to the cabin. Which is why it comes in grades: the softer ones keep comfort close to standard, the harder ones are for sport and track work.

Choosing the kit

  • By mounting point. If only one bush has gone, you can replace that single item.
  • By axle. The usual approach is to renew the whole front or rear axle at once, because the bushes age together.
  • Full kit. On a high-mileage car it works out better than going piece by piece, and it avoids paying for the same labour twice.
  • Grade. Choose for how the car is actually used, not for the hardest available.

The rest of the suspension

Bushes work alongside everything else. There are shock absorbers, sport springs and anti roll bars.

Frequently asked questions

How often do suspension bushes need changing?

There is no fixed interval: it depends on road surface and use. They are worth inspecting from around 60,000 miles, or whenever knocks and play appear in the suspension.

Can I replace just one?

Technically yes, but if the rest of the axle is the same age they tend to fail soon after. Doing the axle avoids repeating the strip-down.

Does polyurethane make the car uncomfortable?

It depends on the grade. The road-use ranges pass on slightly more vibration than rubber, but perfectly liveably. Competition grades you do notice.

Is alignment needed afterwards?

Yes. Any work on the suspension mounting points changes the geometry, so alignment afterwards is part of the job.
