Tailored or universal: what actually differs
A tailored mat is cut from the cabin template of one specific model. It covers the whole floor out to the edges, follows the footrest and centre tunnel, and carries its eyelets or clips exactly where your car has its factory fixings. A universal mat is a trimmable rectangle: it will go in any car, but it leaves areas uncovered and it can slide.
That matters for safety as much as for finish. A loose mat working its way under the accelerator pedal is one of the most common avoidable causes of an incident.
How to choose yours
- Make, model and generation. The model alone is not enough — a Golf 6 and a Golf 7 use different templates. Each listing states the production years it covers.
- Body style. The same model as a saloon, estate or coupé can take a different template.
- Number of pieces. Four and five piece sets cover front and rear; some models use a single rear piece.
- Material and trim. Carpet for daily use and a neater finish; rubber or TPE when mud, snow or water are a regular occurrence.
More for the cabin
If you are refreshing the interior, look at seat covers, car air fresheners, seat belt pads and windscreen wipers.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know a mat is right for my car?
Every reference states the make, the model, the body style and the year range. Check all three: your car's registration year has to fall inside the range shown.
Do they use the original fixings?
Tailored mats are made with the eyelets in the position of that model's factory fixings. If your car has no fixings from the factory, the mat sits on the carpet on its own anti-slip backing.
Can I use carpet mats if a lot of water gets in?
You can, but rubber and TPE wash off with water and cope better with winter use. Plenty of people keep a set of each and swap them by season.
What if my car is not in the catalogue?
There are universal floor mats, trimmed to fit from a generic template.
